I have been teaching for 31 years and have had the good fortune to work in three different countries, teaching students of all ages - from Year 7 to adult learners. However, the majority of my career has been spent teaching A-level Chemistry and Biology, including ten years as A-level Chemistry subject leader at a UK college.

Whether teaching a class or tutoring individually, I make it my business to study exam questions and mark schemes thoroughly. My primary role as a tutor is to help students achieve the highest possible grade. To do this effectively, it is vital that I gain detailed knowledge of the range of questions that may arise, as well as the specific marking points and terminology examiners require.

I am aware that raising achievement is not just about improving a student’s knowledge and understanding - raising confidence is equally important. I therefore break tricky concepts down into a series of simpler, accessible stages, proceeding step by step to build both understanding and confidence. I also take a friendly approach to lessons and genuinely enjoy getting to know my students as individuals.

I work as a tutor not primarily for financial gain, but because I genuinely enjoy working with young people. I find it hugely rewarding to see students improve, grow in confidence, and achieve their goals. I always prepare thoroughly for lessons and tailor them to the individual (and their exam board), designing activities and explanations that make sessions engaging, clarify challenging concepts, and improve the student’s ability to answer exam questions on the topic at hand.
